Types of PM Awas Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is categorised into two types: one for urban areas and the other for rural areas.

PM Awas Yojana–Urban

The PMAY-Urban started in 2015 to provide affordable housing opportunities for people living in urban areas (Metro City). The scheme operates on four major components.

  • Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS): In which the government gives an interest subsidy for home loans, which will help in increasing the overall benefit of the loan and lower the EMI for the candidates.
  • In-Situ Slum Redevelopment (ISSR): In this, the government, along with private companies, redevelops the slums so that people living there can get proper housing in the same area.
  • Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP): in which the government, along with private companies, develops affordable housing for people belonging to the lower income group.
  • Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC): In this, the government provides financial assistance to the beneficiaries to construct a new house or renovate the existing one.

PM Awas Yojana – Gramin

PMAY-Gramin was started to provide proper housing to poor families living in rural areas. The main aim of the scheme is to replace kutcha and damaged houses with strong, permanent pucca houses.

The scheme mainly focuses on families who do not have a house or are living in weak and unsafe conditions in villages.

It works in the following way:

  • Financial Assistance for House Construction – The government provides financial support to eligible rural families to build a pucca house. The amount is higher for people living in hilly, remote, or difficult areas because construction costs are usually more there.
  • Selection of Beneficiaries – Families are selected based on the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) data. The list is then verified by the Gram Sabha to ensure that only genuine and needy families receive the benefit.
  • Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) – The financial assistance is transferred directly into the beneficiary’s bank account. This ensures transparency and reduces the chances of corruption.
